Several years ago, I bought a packaged mix to make dog cookies. It contained a bag of dry ingredients to which you added peanut butter, eggs, and water. They were fun to make and the dogs loved them. Of course, the next time I went to buy the mix, it was no longer available. So I spent a few weeks trying other recipes, looking for one to match the one my little pooches liked best. I finally found this one on the King Arthur Flour website. It is so similar that it could have been the inspiration for the mix!
I hope if dogs take over the world, and they choose a king, they don’t just go by size, because I bet there are some Chihuahuas with some good ideas.”John Handy
I’ve been baking these dog cookies for every pooch in the family for many years now. They are always a hit. Rosie, our black-and-white cock-a-poo, became obsessed with them and would sit and stare at the top of the refrigerator where the treats were kept. She hoped that if she concentrated long enough one of them would magically make its way down to her.
Cookie specifics
According to the King Arthur Flour website...
The recipe comes courtesy of King Arthur friend Elaine Aukstikalnis, who works in a veterinary office; Elaine regularly bakes these biscuits (which have been “vetted by the vet”) to bring to work for “the patients.”
When I described what was in these dog cookies to my grandchildren, they both insisted on trying one. Needless to say, the expressions on their faces when they took a bite were not ones of enjoyment. Cookies? No way!
Shapes
small and large bone-shaped cookie cutters
Sizes
I usually make two sizes: small (1½ inches) for the little chiweenie and big (3½ inches) for the larger critters.

Plate, Box or Bag?
Bags. None of the dogs cares about the packaging! That makes it really easy to bag them up and dole them out whenever a special treat is on the agenda.
What I’ve learned...
My furry friends love cookies, too! These dog cookies are so easy to make and they are very well-received. Rosie was not very discriminating about food. In fact, nothing was off-limits, and often even the wrapper the food came in was devoured. Lucy isn’t as food-oriented, but she is a big fan of these peanut-butter-and-oat snacks. It was a no-brainer for me to expand my cookie-baking efforts into the world of dog treats. And although they say a dog will eat anything, trust me, some dogs won’t. Several of the store-bought dog treats get a define paws-down from my pooches. They never refuse homemade treats, though. And since peanut butter is a favorite flavor, these are high on their list. I like knowing what’s in the food I feed my canine companions and I love to bake. Why not bake for my four-legged family members?
