Our parish offers Baptism classes for parents who are having their babies baptized into the Church. The class runs about two hours and discusses the reasons for receiving baptism and the steps involved in the ceremony. About half way through the class, it’s time for a break...with cookies & coffee. You knew that’s where I was heading, didn’t you?
“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit.” CCC 1213
I made these small heart-shaped cookies for the break time during one of the classes. They would also be a cute addition to the reception that many families have after the baptism ceremony or at a baby shower. The cookie is a “Soft Sugar Cookie,” covered with embossed white chocolate and decorated with pink and blue glaze dots. I lightly brushed the blue cookies with a hint of blue sparkle dust and the pink ones with pink sparkle dust to give them a soft pastel appearance.
Cookie specifics
Soft Sugar Cookies. This cookie has a subtle hint of almond extract and a chewy, soft texture. They are cut a little thicker than the average cutout cookies, which makes every bite an experience of chewy perfection.
Shape
Heart-shaped cookie cutter with fluted edges
Size
This tiny heart-shaped cookie cutter measures 2 inches wide by 1½ inches high.
Cookies
Soft Sugar Cookies: flour, butter, cream cheese, granulated sugar, egg, almond extract, pure vanilla extract, salt
Icing & Decorative Embellishments
Glaze (piping consistency): sugar, water, corn syrup, food coloring (blue and pink), vanilla extract for flavoring
White Chocolate: sugar, cocoa butter, nonfat milk, vanilla
Plate, Box or Bag?
Plate. I arranged them on a plate wrapped in clear plastic wrap. This was the safest way to get them from my house to the baptism class. We served them with coffee for a sweet treat at break time.
What I’ve learned...
These cookies were made with the best ingredients I could find and baked in a small batch of two dozen. I’ve experimented with less expensive ingredients, but have come to the conclusion that flavor is best when I use the best. Why spend all this time baking and decorating if taste and texture are just so-so? Decorating the cookies takes time, but it’s an enjoyable process for me and I know that those who receive them appreciate that. Life is just better when you can share something you love with someone you love. Don’t you agree?
