These shapes are used for monograms, greetings, short messages, symbols, or other embellishments. I like to include at least one “message cookie” with each box or plate of cookies. It’s a nice alternative to a printed greeting card...and so much easier to chew.

Message Cookie specifics
Any cutout cookie recipe can be used to make any shape. If the dough is stiff enough to roll and keep its shape during baking, then it can become a cookie with a greeting or monogram. Now that’s the kind of flexibility I like.
I also like the more homemade look to the lettering. At first, this was because my piping skills were practically non-existent. Now it’s because my actual handwriting is atrocious and I’ve decided to embrace it. If being a doctor relied totally on how illegible your handwiring is, I’d be a neurosurgeon. Instead I’m a cookie baker and we’re all thankful for that!

Shapes
Although I have some shapes I prefer to use, any shape can become a message cookie...squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, hearts, flowers, plaque shapes. And any kind of edge will work: straight, fluted, zig-zag, and free-form.
Sizes
Sizes range from mini (1-2 inches) to large (4-5 inches). Whatever size fits with the rest of the cookies in the batch is the right size.
Cookie Cutters
Here are a few of the shapes I use most often for message cookies.
What I’ve learned...
Adding a cookie with a message or monogram to the batch is a lovely way to personalize it. The message can be humorous or elegant or both. When I give my cookies away or mail them to my family, I’ll often include a homemade tag, but sometimes the message cookie is all that’s needed. “Say it with a cookie” is my motto, and sometimes that means writing on the cookie to make sure you know I made these just for you.
