Dog Cookies

All my dogs have loved these crunchy peanut butter biscuits. I like knowing what goes into the food I give them and I love to bake, so everyone — furry and not-so-furry — wins. Thanks to the King Arthur Flour website for this Lucy-approved recipe!

Recipe

Ingredients

248g (2 cups) whole wheat flour

85g (1 cup) rolled oats, regular or quick

1 tablespoon dried parsley or 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

53g (½ cup) nonfat dry milk

    2 large eggs

269g (1 cup) peanut butter, crunchy or plain

115mL (½ cup / 4 oz.) cold water, enough to make a cohesive dough

Yield: 42 large or 140 mini cookies

    Prep Time: 15 minutes

    Bake Time: 40-60 minutes

    Total Time: 55-75 minutes

    Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Lightly grease a couple of baking sheets, or line them with parchment.
    2. Mix together the flour, oats, parsley, dried milk, and salt.
    3. Add the eggs and peanut butter, stirring to combine; the mixture will be crumbly.
    4. Add enough water to bring the dough together; depending on the season, you may need to add a bit more (winter), or a bit less (summer).
    5. To make cut-out “cookies” using a bone-shaped cookie cutter, roll the dough about ¼" thick, and cut with a cookie cutter the size of your choice. I use a 3½" cutter (for large bones) and a 1½" (for mini bones). Gather and re-roll the scraps, and continue to cut biscuits until you’ve used all the dough. Or just drop the dough in walnut-sized balls onto the prepared baking sheets and flatten them with the bottom of a glass to about ¼".
    6. Bake the biscuits for about 40 to 60 minutes, baking the smaller cookies for a shorter amount of time. When finished, the biscuits will be dark golden brown, and will be dry and crisp all the way through.
    7. Remove the biscuits from the oven, and cool right on the pans.

    Recipe Notes

    • Replace the water with chicken broth for an extra bump in flavor.
    • Dog biscuits crowded on the baking sheetThese biscuits do not spread at all so you can place them very close together and get all 140 mini treats on just two baking sheets.
    • I store about half of the biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature and freeze the rest for later.

In the instructions you mention adding in eggs, but there are no eggs listed in the ingredient list. How many eggs?
